It comes In Colors (For My Birthday) ( 495 reads) Tuesday, July 10, 2012 (22:21:47)

fogglethorpe's Blogs
The oak
spends centuries dying
in the perennial grandeur
of shedding and regrowth;
finally that year arrives
when nothing grows back.

The violet
cannot spare the petals
that blow down the walk;
the robin
drops one feather at a time
until she is grounded, and becomes prey;

Their ends come in crimson and gold,
in pink,
in blue and red and more;
poets and philosophers
have plenty of fodder
to pad their posthumous résumés.

Then there is me,
there is us;
my hairline is higher,
testosterone lower,
stomach bigger,
lungs smaller-

and the real lesson is
that laws of entropy and gravity
cannot be repealed
in a world that fell
like leaves
and feathers and petals.

What remnants of slow death
are we leaving,
this pen and me,
but grey follicles in the shower drain
and black ink
soaked into dead trees?

After reading this Blog-poem I felt sad but I shouldn’t have, like the oak I have left behind new life. Have a grand tomorrow…Jack
