| An auto workshop with an Indonesian dinner and a poetry reading... ( 652 reads) |

Last month I was invited by a visiting Indonesian poet to read at a gathering of Indonesian and Australian poets who make up what they call the Jembatan Society. This was held at a most unusual venue, called the Garage Cafe because it is an auto repair workshop which has been converted into an Indonesian restaurant. It still has all the trappings of the workshop and cars can drive right into the restaurant to park! Meanwhile diners are sitting there enjoying some very fine Indonesian food, and once a month they have poetry readings by Australian and Indonesian poets. I read my "Night song" and a few other recent things. There are photos on their blog:

It sounds like a fascinating venue, it’s always good to get together with other poets and get a chance to read your work in the way you meant it to be read and expressed. I much prefer reciting mine to people than having them read them. I think first hand interaction with other writers is very healthy and inspiring. When my group meet once a month we always try a different venue and you often get other people over hearing who wouldn’t normally be interested in poetry, and it’s always nice on occasions when some one comes up and said they enjoyed listening. Poetry events are a bit thin on the ground in my home town though I’m always doing my best to promote it a bit more. Even to the extent of hijacking the karaoke mic in my local pub when it’s a bit quiet. and nobodies whining like a dog.

Going through the blog, i can imagine how enriching the evening must've been for all. Loved your pic, too!
