Holiday Blues (a Villanelle) by Judis57
December snow falls quietly in shining crystal flakes
of frozen mosaic art etched on glass in patterns that amaze,
and yet I wonder...is that why we celebrate?
We shop with money saved or never had; we anticipate
gifts we'll receive and hope gifts given will be praised
as December snow falls quietly in shining crystal flakes
and kitchens are warmed by gingerbread men who never hesitate
to break at least one leg just to add stress to our Christmas daze.
Still I wonder...is that why we celebrate
with holiday eggnog that make loose lips communicate
feelings best left unsaid while in an alcoholic haze
and December snow falls quietly in shining crystal flakes
and closets hide presents not yet wrapped, as we plan and perpetrate
the process of paper and bows being cut and strewn in a hurried craze,
and I wonder...is that why we celebrate
the coming of Christmas, Santa, and Christ; forgetting the hate
that consumes us otherwise, perhaps in a different time or phase,
yet I have to wonder...is that why we celebrate
as December snow falls quietly in shining crystal flakes?

Congratulations, Judis57. I found this to be a great villanelle; its unusually long lines gave me the feeling of Nat King Cole's "A Christmas Song", and the theme hits home in many ways. Well done!

Judis57, I enjoyed your villanelle. It has a classic kind of feel with a modern twist. The message is ultimately an exhortation, I think, and that makes it uplifting.

I thought it was a fine effort, and it well deserves the plaudits. Congrats!

I'll echo the other judges. A fine example of the use of form which doesn't feel overly dated or archaic in its language.
