While Slicing Onions
(for caroline t-c)

while slicing onions
i vividly remember
the night you let me
take a fresh blade
and dull it on
your back

carving icons of
every religion I could think of
overlapping
crisscrossing
washing over them
with searing traces of flames
drawing up rivulets
of red salty venom
i was sure would
corrode the blade
corrupt its edge

i remember how you
described the sting
of showering
days afterward
with such obscene pride
as if bearing my cross
were your delight
your ambition
your happy undoing

when all I secretly wanted
was to cut away desire
to sever some corporeal ties
to trim away the guilt
of knowing that very soon
i would have to cut you loose

Of fruits or vegetables
I prefer the first
Fruits flit
Vegetables sit, silent

Fruits are colorful, flamboyant
Vegetables are dull

Fruits have a twinkle in their overshadowed eyes
Vegetables have dark circles around their shiftless stares

I could go on and on
But the facts would not change
Vegetables have lost their personality
While a fruits are ever changing

Vegetables make for good furniture
Fruits are often the life of the party

Well, what did you expect?

This is a poem by cmark entitled

"Running circles around 'THE MAN'"

fruits or vegetables
its hard to choose between the two
i'd eat fruit in the morning
but I couldnt eat brocolli at 9 am
I'd eat it after my waffles
but those are my midnight snack
so i guess I don't have to choose now do i?

Love could easily be described as fruits and vegetables,
Theres some that we like and some that we cant stand,
Just like theres some things about you that make me smile,
And then theres those things that annoy me about you,
But we have always been told we have to eat our fruits and vegetables to be healthy,
Just like we have to love to be healthy,
We may go on strike and refuse to eat our fruits or veggies,
But one day we will eat them again,
It is inevitable,
We cannot escape love,
And as we grow older,
Those fruits and veggies that we may not have liked before,
Change to be of our liking,
The same applies to love,
Some of those things that annoy me about you,
Eventually grow on me,
And when your gone I miss them,
And I am desperate without them,
Because I need my fruits and veggies,
Just like I need to feel loved,
And it may not be the best thing in life,
But like my parents always said,
Thats just the way it is,
Dont ask why...

Hamburger

i’ll have mine with a soft drink
sweet nectar of hard candy
abrupt with the sighing of bubbles

give me potatoes stripped of skin
damp, eyeless
cut into dollhouse four by fours
broken up like a home
and tossed into boiling oil

may i also please
have my meat peeking out the sides
bulging like love handles

and a flying saucer made of bread
that’s what i want the top to look like
like it landed there, a little off center

i want catsup bled on white bread
i love the way mustard coagulates
with grease and soaks
into the bottom half of the bun

i like onion chopped into tiny bits
sharp edged like shards of glass
or perfect icebergs poking up
from mayonnaise

give me lettuce
lettuce being to wimpy
what spinach was to popeye
make mine with lettuce

and tomato like a red pumpkin earth
but i want my tomato sliced
until it looks like a wheel
flopped on its side and brimming with seeds

yes
and thank you for asking

i would like some american cheese on that
because i’m an american
and hamburger is american food
