National Poetry Slam

The National Poetry Slam (NPS) is a performance poetry competition where teams from across the United States, Canada, and France participate in a large-scale poetry slam. The event occurs in early August every year and takes place in a different US city. There were three competing teams at the first NPS in 1990 - Chicago (birthplace of slam), New York, and San Francisco (host city). In 2007, there were 76 teams. The event is run by Poetry Slam Incorporated and requires registration to participate in. The 2008 National Poetry Slam will take place in Madison, Wisconsin.

NPS has also been the subject of several professional documentaries, including the 1998 Paul Devlin film SlamNation, and the 2006 Kyle Fuller and Mike Henry film Slam Planet.
