( 1 ) NEWS & TIBITS
~~~~~~~~
---TOURETTES WITHOUT REGRETS is the biggest
slam on the West Coast; but it's more like
a filthy vaudeville event than poetry reading.
They are notorious for revolting audience-
participation games, like playing hot potato
with a cow's tongue. One of their main events
this week is the Scum-bag Olympics. I have no
doubt it will be as hilarious as it is
discusting! Plus, their new venue is a hit!
Details: ( 4 ).
---LOCAL POETS INJURED IN BRAWL: A group of local
poets and slammasters were seriously injured in
a drunken melee this weekend in San Francisco:
ekabhumi.livejournal.c...00189.html
---SLUMBER PARTY with Mike McGee!?! What could be
more fun? How about if it was in the San Jose
Museum of Art this Saturday? Details: ( 15 ).
---SF SLAM will go on hiatus during the month of
September. SF Slaminatrix Mona Webb can be seen
guest emceeing at the Berkeley Slam, however, on
the first Weds monthly through November. That
includes TONIGHT! Details: ( 2 ).
---CHICO SLAM is back! Details: ( 6 ).
( 2 ) BERZERKELEY --Every Wednesday.
* West Coast Champions *
Ekabhumi checks in:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~~~~
----THIS WEEK: Open Slam! $150 Cash Prizes, hot
pizza, Live Jazz, and cool Irish beer on tap.
SF Slaminatrix Mona Webb hosts, 3 Blind Mice
bring the Live Jazz.
---FEATURING: Team San Francisco! This energetic
young team struggled in our local Battle of the Bay,
but shocked all the critics by kicking ass at
Nationals and finishing in the top 20. Members
include: Stephen Meads, Mark States, Matt Blesse,
Dre, and Leigh Anne. Many of these poets are also
powerhouse competitors right here in Berkeley, so
this is your chance to see them without the pressure
of numbers and judges, as part of multi-voice group
poems! SF Slaminatrix Mona Webb is emceeing ( sorry,
no home cooking tonight! ) while Joshua Walters is
away on vacation. She'll be holding down the first
Weds in Oct and Nov as well!
----LAST WEEK: Had an excellent time emceeing with
Dre. Our feature, Rudy Francisco, exceeded all
expectations and our crowd loved him. His work was
fun, uplifting, and delivered with a certain casual
elegance. I'd recommend him to any and all. I'm
guessing plenty of our regulars skipped the show
because they didn't recognize a poet from San Diego,
but they seriously missed out. Lots of great new
poets and new poems.
---Our audience was modest, about 100 with 17 sign
ups. The judges were in an odd mood... they REALLY
liked what they really liked... there were THREE
perfect 30's in the first round, including the first
poet up!!! I think that's some kind of record for
the history books; I've never seen it before! On the
other hand, they were giving out 8's and 6's till
the end. So high-scoring but consistent.
---Nazelah started us off merrily, sacrificing with
a tribute poem to poetry and performance that incor-
porated all kinds of unique Berkeley elements! It
was cool how the poem acknowledged the PLACE it was
performed! Top 5 Poets: Lucky 7 knocked it out of
the park as the first competitor up with "Movie Of
My Birth" for a perfect 30. WOW. Poet "-i-" debuted
a new piece "Skeletons In The Closet" that ALSO
earned a 30. Jelal ripped a new piece about Concious
Hiphop that ALSO got a 30. Dusty Rose and Baraka
debuted a new duet about Polyamory with incredible
synchopation for a 29. Baruch admitted "I Like Taco
Bell" and squeaked into the top 5 with a 28.4.
---The newbies have been doing really well, but
folks were HUNGRY tonight! Like, veteran slammers
literally slamming for grocery money. So folks
wasn't playin! Much respect to Preacher's Son,
Dahled, Elan, Abe, Nina, and Tammy, all of whom
scored over 27. A special shoutout especially to
all the new poets. It seems we have a lot of Youth
Speaks alums in the mix lately.
---Round 2, Matt Blesse set the bar very high with
ANOTHER new poem ( it's that time of year! ). Dusty
& Baraka returned with "The Vagilante" ( as in
Vagina ) which had hilarious moments but had to
settle for 5th. Baruch finished 4th with a tribute
to all the lovely men on BART. Jelal RIPPED a new
Geek anthem, but had to settle for 3rd, because
tonight was a BATTLE between two divas: Poet "-i-"
returned with "I Wanna Be Beautiful" and earned an
intimidating 29.5. Lucky 7 replied with a spirited
rendition of "Marvel Poet" but came up .4 shy of
the win.
----UPCOMING: Next week is the notorious 80'S THEME
NIGHT, which means you can wear costumes and read
any poems/lyrics from the 80's. Pop music and rap
lyrics are highly encouraged! Get out your penny
loafers and polo shirts, your Punk Rock monkey
boots, your hairspray and leg warmers! Featuring
Team Berkeley's the poet "-i-". host: Lucky 7.
SEPT 17: CONTROVERSE presents the "Drugs, Damage, &
Destruction" themed open slam, featuring National
Indi Finalist and local heavyweight, Jaylee Alde.
Host: Jamie DeWolf & Syszygy.
PSYCHOTIC EROTIC VAUDEVILLE and EVIL AUDIENCE
CONTESTS!!
---The last Tourettes was a deranged mash-up of a
show with a huge turn out, full on audience
debauchery, surrealist trophies for our three
rings of competition and an evil contest of WHAT's
DOWN MY PANTS? which got so absurdly out of hand
that the indomitable MISS ASHLEIGH couldn't stomach
it and even your un-shockable host had to flinch.
If you weren't there, wait for the video to be
unleashed soon!
---THIS THURSDAY the behemoth of Tourettes returns
with a huge pyrotechnic explosion of talent with
all that is good in the world of Tourettes and what
makes our show such a triple fisted whiplash whirl-
pool of talent with sultry burlesque from Vancouver
from the hellfire hot MALAIKA MILLIONS, the
amazingly entertaining juggling beatboxer BRONKAR,
and the gutter king of freestyle ciphers and the
Bukowski of hip hop: TOPR! Videos and pics for them
all are below. Getting them all together in one
night is a huge coup, this show is low brow, high
brow and uni-brow, the best of everything! Ever
since we've been at the New Metro, we've been
lining up some of the most ferociously talented
folks from the underground and this show is gonna
be a doozy, with a line-up I'm amped just to watch!
We add such audience crazed contests as the
mysterious SCUM-BAG OLYMPICS, a Phone Sex Face-Off
and other dirty surprises! Check out the videos
( 5 ) SAN JOSE --Next Slam: MON, Sept 8.
Mike McGee checks in:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~~~~
----MACLA's gallery and theater have become the much
needed new home of spoken word in downtown San Jos.
The SJ Poetry Slam is back and on fire. It's good to
be in a venue that really cares about why we're
there.
----Thanks to a generous sponsorship from Faultline
Brewing Company in Sunnyvale, we have beer at every
slam. It's pretty darn good stuff I might add.
----LAST SLAM: With few poets being around the Bay
Area or even thinking about touring - all due to the
National Poetry Slam last weekend, we had little to
no SF, Santa Cruz, or East Bay poet contingency
signed up. I'm sure everyone was resting and de-
compressing from their trip to Madison, WI. That
didn't stop people from slamming though! Our sign
up list looked like a roster of Silicon Valley
newbies.
----We took 13 poets into the first round and heard
fabulous work from people of all ages. The vibe was
extraordinary and MACLA was full of many new
attendees. There wasn't a single performance that
didn't keep the audience listening. There were
moments so quietly intense, you could hear your own
heartbeat, while most poems ended in an eruption of
cheer. It was great and it felt like the old days
when Vadim Litvak used to run the SJPS. Our
attendance hasn't dropped below 40+ since we moved
venues!
----Thanks to the ever growing turn out, we upped
the prize ante to $30 for first, $20 for second,
and $15 for third.
----FEATURE: Bill Peckham ( ever our unofficial San
Jos Poet Laureate ) brought much thought and wartime
awareness to the stage with his poem about Hiroshima
and Nagasaki, very timely considering their recent
anniversaries. Then I re-took the stage in a short,
fun set of poems and anecdotes.
----SECOND ROUND: With odes to Jesus, culture, race,
and everything youthful, it was Ausitn Ashford who
came out on top, followed by his buddy Jeff in
second, and David Perez in third.
----NEXT SLAM: Sept. 8, 2008 - 2nd Monday, every
month. We'll probably start our official season of
team qualification. Contact Kat about it at her
email address below.
( 6 )CHICO --Next Slam: THURS, Sept 11.
Matt Zellmer checks in:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~~~~~~~~
----Chico Poetry Slam returned from its absence in
the community with its first slam of the season on
Thursday, August 28th, 2008 Robertsonat Augie's
Fine Coffee & Tea!
----The slam was a success because of the level of
attendance at a new venue and the diversity and
dynamic nature of the poems performed. Nine Chico
slammers and one out-of-town slammer tore right
through the center of everyone in the room in a
two-round gut check. Love, heartbreak, pain,
innocence, faith, family, stereotype, and many
other universally human themes were represented on
the mic. Chico poet John Staedler performed an
incredibly high-energy poem about loving people.
He scored well, but despite delivering the most
energetic poem of the first round, he would not
advance into the second round. Kristina Robertson,
who will be featuring at Chico Poetry Slam on
November 6th, made the trip up to Chico with fellow
Bay Area poet and feature of the night Kim Johnson
to slam with the Chico poets. Kristina's poem
about her identity as an Asian-American won the
crowd and the judges. Chico poet Matthew Zellmer
also scored well, and despite his stumbles through
a poem about dealing with heartbreak, he would join
newcomers Larry and Burke, as well as out-of-town
slammer Kristina Robertson in the second round.
Originally from New Orleans, and with a street-
preacher's intensity, Larry stole the show in the
second round with a poem about replacing violence
and intolerance with beauty and love, just missing
a perfect 30 by a few decimal places, and winning
the slam rather convincingly.
----As a feature, Kim Johnson was everything the
Chico Slam could ask for. Her affection for wordplay
and her laser-guided sense for the theatrical were
displayed warmly and completely. She held nothing
back, and Chico rewarded her with the best in smiles
that the slam has to offer. It was a joy having
her, and Chico Poetry Slam cannot wait until she
makes a return trip up north.
----On a less inspiring note, Chico Poetry Slam may
be forced to relocate once again, as the owner of
Augie's Fine Coffee & Tea, a church-affiliated caf,
was not terribly pleased with the content of many
of the poems performed. Poetry can be a dangerous
thing, and I would be remiss if I didn't say that
the poets at the Chico Poetry Slam were fantastic
on August 28th. Ruffling feathers doesn't just
come with the territory, it's part of the job
description.
