Poet/Storyteller David Gonzalez Releases Popular Kids DVDs
News in Poetry AWARD-WINNING STORYTELLER/PERFORMER DAVID GONZALEZ BRINGS HIS POPULAR CHILDREN’S SHOWS TO DVD[align=center]

From one of the top children’s entertainers in the country, two theatrical shows, The Frog Bride and Aesop Bops!, are available for the first time on DVD starting October 7. After performing his magical, multimedia works for the past 25 years for hundreds of thousands of young audiences, storyteller/performer David Gonzalez casts his spell onto the screen with hours of myths, folk tales, and fairy tales that engage imaginations and opens the hearts of all ages. Currently performing at performing arts centers and schools across the country (see attached for tour schedule), both The Frog Bride and Aesop Bops! combine Gonzalez’s street-style humor and kinetic storytelling with live music, mesmerizing art and video projections, mime, dance and above all, inspired imagination.

Influenced by Gonzalez’s experiences as both a music therapist and his childhood in the Bronx, these ages-old stories are always told with a vision of hope and transformation that are essential to a child’s growth. “I’ve been on a roll to bring great music and great art to young people without being teacherly about it,” explains Gonzalez. “I hope children come away with the sense of adventure that we all have as we move towards deeper understanding and love.” For over 10 years, The Frog Bride and Aesop Bops! have been staples of the Lincoln Center Institute, and many other national performing arts programs, and have been implemented into numerous schools’ arts curricula and classes nationwide.

Recognized with a Drama Desk nomination for “Unique Theatrical Experience,” The Frog Bride is a new adaptation of the timeless Russian fable. Filled with comic sparkle, Gonzalez tells this tale of a dreamy (and prideful) young man’s journey into manhood by playing 12 different characters with his expressive voice and supple body. Set against a vivid video backdrop inspired by the art of Vasily Kandinsky, The Frog Bride interweaves musical selections from Sergei Prokofiev’s Five Melodies for Violin and Piano with an original jazz-funk score performed by Christian Howes (violin) and Daniel Kelly (keyboard). Aesop Bops!, a fast-paced, funny show based on a potpourri of Aesop’s classic stories, is soaked with animal characters and kid-sized morals. Led by Gonzalez as storyteller/guitarist, the tales of The Lion and the Mouse, The Fisherman and His Wife, and The Turtle’s Shell are told with the energetic rhythms and contemporary vibes of The Yak Yak Band - Daniel Kelly (keyboard), Dave Hertzberg (bass), and Chris Michael (drums).

Described as “a New York Puerto Rican version of Bill Cosby,” David Gonzalez is keeping the ancient art of storytelling alive. A winner of the Helen Hayes Performing Artist of the Year Award, he is applauded for his vocal, physical and narrative talents and gift for mimicry, comic timing, and wordplay. Relying on the majesty and variety of language, the limitless landscape of imagination, the pulse of music and the beauty of art, he creates and performs multimedia productions that ring true for audiences of all ages and cultures. He received his doctorate in Music Therapy from NYU’s School of Education, where he later taught for 10 years. He was the host of WNYC’s New York Kids for eight seasons and contributes to NPR’s Studio 360. www.davidgonzalez.com.
