---HAPPY HOLIDAYS! While many slams ( like Berkeley,
Chico & Sacramento ) will take a break during the
holidays, several others will continue. Please
check carefully before going to your regular spot,
and be certain it's still on!
--2008 was a good year for slams in NorCal overall.
Though there were plenty of changes in venues,
audiences and slams were relatively stable. Our
teams did well at Nationals and we had tons of
promising new talent step up in the `off season'.
---2009 promises to be even more exciting, with
Berkeley hosting the Individual World Poetry Slam
( IWPS ) next October. New Slams ( Such as Oakland's
"Golden State," ( 8 ) and San Jose's "Indi Slam" ( 9 )
have already sprouted up to participate in the
eagerly-anticipated event. Details: ( 13 ).

representing the new freestyle spoken word movement.
Always expressing his high time, spitting out all
he's digested in his 25 years some how forming it
into a piece. He has shared stages with the likes
of: Sual Williams, Bo Sia, KRS-1, Rakem, Will Power,
The Roots, and the Last Poets. He sought out NYC, to
expand his artistic experience with organizations
such as Youth Speaks, Create Now, and University
Settlement. He's gone on to direct plays and after-
school programs. He's back in the Bay after having
toured and performed all over the country.

are floating around*, no we at the Golden State
Slam do not have ANY BEEF with the Original Oakland
Slam ran by Naz & Dahled. I've learned a lot from
them, my 2008, 2007 & 2003 teammates and from the
two Co-Founders Nisa & Sonia.
----After being Oakland Grand Slam Champion two
years in a row and learning how to coach and play

---iWPS 2009: This incredible event to will come
to Berkeley in 2009! 72 poets representing slam
venues from around the world converge for three
days of competition, electrifying audiences with
their talents.
---Berkeley plans to add many related day events
and side competitions to the main tournament,
transforming it into a 10-day festival. We have
confirmed prelim indi events in Napa, Oakland,
Monterey, and San Francisco. The main event will
be held at venues near the Ashby BART station in
South Berkeley, home of the Berkeley Slam and our
home venue, the Starry Plough. Epic Arts, Poetry
Flash, and Youth Speaks are partners in the
event.
--Epic Arts is a Performance Arts non-profit based
in South Berkeley. Their new facility will be the
epicenter of IWPS 2009.
