The Blackberry Patch

Drifting down an old dirt road in the country
I watched as the dust made clouds around my car
Passing the time away while I listened to the radio
To some old country tunes I have not heard in awhile

The sun was shining and there was a slight breeze
My once long hair was doing it's best to move about
I was satisfied with the day coming to an end
As long as tomorrow would be just as good

I watched what was left of the setting sun sink lower
The warm rays sparkled, calling the end of the day
Evening was upon me as the last rays disappeared
As if they had drowned in the rows of standing timbers

As I pulled over into a nearby field to rest my soul
My lights captured a sight that I knew well from childhood
I left the lights on bright as I walked the few paces
To the clustered vines of some overgrown blackberry patch

I picked a few and headed back to the hood of my car
Laying down on the hood, I looked up at the night sky
Savoring the tart-sweetness as thoughts of my younger days
Played like an unforgettable rerun in my mind

I thought about picking blackberries with my mother
And how long it had been since I had lost her
I smiled as I remembered the fond memories
Tasting another blackberry as the tears began
to form in my eyes
