Concrete Sue (Continuation)

by st1rn3r

No fire burns within her soul,
____nor warmth is found without;
her eyes which frozen, numbing, dull,
____are keeping watch and count
____of stranger's passing through
their way to work, in passing shadows
____cast on Concrete Sue.

Sue who watches business men
____and women of the night
who every day would solemn tend
____their needs in waining light
____in dresses painted "sold"
by fire-tempered lust and schemes
____of turning led to gold.

Gold like burning cigarettes
____on motel table stands
by windows framing winter sunsets
____and guilty ring'ed hands
____that grab for warmth and bread
and now would grab her hair, her sweat:
____a road that many tread.

Treading tires on a car
____that Susie rides inside
with windows iced by winds December
____lovingly confides
____in cocaine-colored lies
that paint the leather seats nostalgic
____while Susie, knowing, sighs.

Sighs and dreams a mother's dream
____of homely life and days
unmarked by nightly sin, and clean
____with pride to show and say
____that Susie now shall lay
her childred, only, down to sleep,
____and sleep herself after the day.

The days she'd greet, with restful sight,
____the sun, and keep her life
where Sue would dictate that she might
____now live and age and fight
____her fights with purpose more
than left to whims of stranger's passing
____pocket's tempting store.

Stored with papers, pens and plans
____that Susie hates to hear,
and hates the more she understands
____those men whose pens are near-
____er truth than truth their hearts,
which beat in nervous-ticking clockwork
____Susie hears and marks.

Marks on bills with steady hands,
____the marks that paper pays
to rid the business debt and strands
____of guilt now washed away;
____But "hands ne'er be clean",
and bedsheets washed with bleach will keep
____their spot and damn'ed stains.
