Where I'm From

I’m from the land of misfits, where infant cries and children’s screams fall on deaf ears, and backs are turned because no one sees anything.
I’m from an area of multiple cultures, where curry, oregano, and sazon blend to make unrecognizable scents in the hallway.
I’m from a place of danger where neighbors are both friend and foe, and “watching your back” is a way of life.
I’m from a place where $20 is offered to children in exchange for acts usually reserved for the bedroom, by adults.
I’m from a time where a mother is an absent presence and a father is but a faded memory.
I’m from “Where am I going to lay my head amongst this freezing snow?” after hearing, “I don’t care if you’re pregnant; you’re not living here”.
I’m from a time of perseverance where neglected children grow up to be attentive parents.
I’m from “She’s Autistic”, from screaming and tantrums mixed with heartbreak and an equal amount of overwhelming love.
I’m from fear and happiness, doctors and playgrounds, insecurity and peace.
I’m from first words, steps, smiles, laughs and hugs.
I’m from milestones, from recognizing that each step is as important as the step already taken, and the steps yet to take.
I’m from miracles where I get to watch my little girls prove all of the “specialists” wrong every day.
I’m from reasons aplenty to keep trying when all seems lost and no end is in sight.
I’m from love and dedication, given for no reason, and accepted with open arms.
I’m from family, the true meaning of which is finally known, experienced, and appreciated.
I’m from true joy, an experience that many take for granted, and I have come to appreciate but never anticipate.
I’m from a child’s love, the kind of love that is unquestionable and like no other.
I’m from new events that have managed to make old happenstance nothing but a faded memory that has no meaning to my life.
I’m from new reasons every day to laugh and smile without fear or shame, not worried about acceptance or ridicule.
I’m from precious moments that remind me how blessed I am to be who I am, where I am, and have the life that I live.
I’m from life, where every struggle makes you stronger and every hardship is a lesson learned.
