Was it Worth It?

I remember the day I told you my secret
I was young, just 4 years, a little girl
“Daddy made me touch his wee-wee,”
I whispered in your ear, twisting your hair
around my tiny little pinkie; you held me close

Do you remember that day, mom? So long ago
You said it would stop; you called him a bastard
I listened in the hallway when you made the call
I heard you say he had to stop, you said, he agreed,
He didn’t stop; every other weekend, a trip to hell

Where were you, when my innocence was taken?
On that night, father with his barroom breath
came to tuck me in, silent tears sliding down
sinless cheeks, sea-green eyes begging for pity
from a wild-eyed soulless man; finding none

How much was my virginity worth to you?
Was it worth the weekends you spent alone-
you and your husband, no kid, unburdened
while I carried the shame on my shoulders
Husband gone, who do you have now?
