A.H.S CENTAUR, (souls now rest)

67 years she laid lost
now the souls her ghost shall rest
families can now finish mourning
A.H.S Centaur can finally berth

May 14, 1943 her last day of sail
a hospital ship heading to retrieve the wounded
New Guinea bound with doctors and nurses
silently a shadow tracks her

Off the Queensland coast she steamed unaware
of a Japanese sub so close
her mission was to rescue people
nothing more

At 4am on that morn, all would change
268 souls would be lost
just over 60 would drift
a day and a half at sea

She was well lite and marked
the mark of a floating hospital
clear to all to see
a universal sign

67 years she laid silent
blind to those wanting closure
families not knowing the truth
assumptions, all they had

Now they have found her
broken
But clear as day the hospital cross is visible
so too the hole ripped in her side by a torpedo

2000 meters down
green band and cross so clear
a grave ever more

there is on the sand next to her a soldiers slouch hat
like it was just lost
a tea set placed so gently on the sea bed
her bell could well still ring

A.H.S Centaur can finally berth

on Dec. 20 2009, A.H.S. Centaur was found
to all those that suffered through her loss
and to the families of those that died that day,
