Poems - Haiti

Haiti

The ground rumbled once again
They'd heard that sound before.
But never had the evil beast
Released such an angry roar.

Buildings tumbled to the ground
At the heart of that one day.
People scattered everywhere
Not knowing which way.

But nowhere was safe from the wrath
Of the monsters shaking.
The pains and horrors of yesteryear were
Suddenly awaken.

Port-au-Prince was ruined,
Once a city; now only debris.
Some were crushed by tumbling stone
Too slow, too late, to flee.

The world was alerted to the emergency,
A cry for help was called.
Country leaders everywhere
Said how they were appalled.

On that night the streets were filled
With exhausted villagers seeking sleep.
Whilst many lay injured and dying
Without help and far too weak.

For a country such has Haiti
Has poor emergency aid.
So the ground was hit
With an speedy spade.

Digging a hole for the dead to fill
Thousands piled in.
Without a prayer offered to them,
Thrown in there on a whim.

The world quickly responded
And began to give generously.
But many were still trapped
Dying painfully and helplessly.

The aid taking it's time to filter through
Now the world watches one week on.
This struggle for Haitians continues,
Feeling like twice as long.

All we can do is keep giving
To help those who have survived.
And offer our thoughts to the families
Of those that have died.

The future is obscured by dust now
But the President's have set their plan.
To make the future of Haiti
As bright as they possibly can.

So time will tell
If Haiti is lifted out of the dirt.
Or if to poverty and danger
It will revert.
