Alexandria

by maryanns

Alexandria, you’ve grown so tall
my little granddaughter
born beneath the northern lights.
I sense your breath escapes in sighs
as you pursue current events
at your local Anchorage high school.

Alexandria, your heart is warm
with opportunities at hand.
Your gentle grasp for freedom
can be heard throughout the land…

Alexandria, your populace parades
from gardens of the past
through windowpanes of glass;
your bridges built of ancient stone
once cobbled Caesar’s throne
to Cleopatra’s worthy golden home.

Alexandria, what have you learned
in your history class today?
Should stability be considered
absolution for an evil tyrant’s rage?
Why did the Roman Empire fall;
were any real lessons learned at all?

Alexandria, you look to the future
yet elders only see the past
like a record that repeats itself
throughout centuries without relief.
What did you learn, little girl…
could your generation fail as well?

Alexandria, please don’t lose faith
home could be a good place
to hone priceless skills in school.
Imagine if you and your classmates
could simply change the world
by standing peacefully holding hands.

For my sweet granddaughter

of Anchorage, Alaska, USA

Ah, my wish come true... For a week I have been saying, Kinda where are you? No one is writing of this historic event. Thank you so very much, my friend. I hope to find your pen has been busy as well; authenticity matters so much. Thank you once again...
Peace and smiles, Mary Ann
