Poems - Peace
| | Peaceby fogglethorpe
It’s more than the absence of bullet and bomb
A tentative, fragile, and relative calm
The trademark it forms with shalom and salaam
They fight over sand
It’s more than a brand
So where do we go from here?
It’s more than two fingers stood up like a V
The circle with semaphores N and a D
And Mr. John Lennon’s ridiculous plea
We’ve waited too long
It’s more than a song
So where do we go from here?
It’s more than a rifle that’s broken in two
And goddess Eirene with a fresh olive branch
And all the white poppies the world ever grew
And all of the bleeding we’re able to stanch
It’s not an achievement for those who are smart
A bright rainbow flag or a sensitive heart
The total of science, religion, and art
We’ve done all that stuff
It’s never enough
So where do we go from here?

'Smack - Bang' to the point in every sense, with a question no one can ever answer. This poem has a great melody.

Thanks. I'm glad you mentioned melody..it is mostly anapest meter, and meant to be set to music. And I did leave it open ended by design. Hoping you and yours are well..-H

What's good
The message
The lyrics
the piece as a whole
The peace as a whole
(my mind did that)

We go forward, to the best of our ability.Trying not to look back at the remanants of a crippled life, but forward to were we walk with a pride of acheivement. Of leaving the hate and violence behind. Thanks for sharing, dAVE

Dave..thanks for reading. I wanted to write an atypical protest song, looking at peace as more of an anachronism.

Beautiful poem and heart felt. Reading it all the way through it keeps carrying me back to the second stanza...
They fight over sand
It’s more than a brand
These two lines should tell us what to do. They fight over sand because it is their sand and it has been branded with their ancestors blood and enemies. To let go would disrespect their ancestors and also their enemies.
We no the answer to the question on what to do.
Let them have their sand... BWP... James... Hopes for peace...

Hi James..thanks for sharing your insight.
The poem does not take a position on the conflict you mentioned, or any other one. But it is meant to provoke thought by asking a question, by saying, "Ok, we have failed miserably up to now. What's next?" The commercialization and even the dumbing down of the word "peace" doesn't help..I tried to cover most of the popular ways this has been done.

I just love your poetry, and this one is filled with such emotion and satire. It is my belief poets feel the injustice of it all more than any other group of people.
Great writing.
Best,

Hi Tamara..and thank you for that. I think poets expose things, big and small.
Peace is a metaphysical notion that must reside within us in order to be divided amongst the interpreters--and the ones who know what peace is when it comes to unity. You displayed an excellent message here.
