Poems - Wendy Love
| | Wendy Loveby Marty
WENDY LOVE
The sun was gone, the sky was grey
and Wendy Love wanted to play…
*********
Wendy Love was feeling blue
She wanted to do something new
So, she climbed the attic stair
To see what she could find up there
In her mothers' cedar trunk
She found some clothes and other junk
A stethoscope and nurse's hat
A cape, a glove, a baseball bat
Some ballet shoes and a raggedy doll
An old pith cap and a big red shawl
A Halloween Hat and other things
(Like several plastic spider rings)
Five China cups – and an artist pad
A sewing kit - Four ♥ cards from dad
Three 45's and a phonograph
Two beanbag hippos plus One giraffe
When all was spread out on the floor
Wendy started to explore
"Explorer Wendy" changed her name
And went out hunting for big game
She "bagged" two hippos and a long necked beast
Then sailed for tea in the Far (off) East
She crossed the ocean and dessert sand
To dine with Kings in a distant land
When tea was through she heard the call
For everyone to come play ball
As "Slugger Wendy" came to bat
The crowd in silent wonder sat
She hit the ball with all her might
And watched it sail out of sight
Then as she made the winning score
The crowd let out a mighty roar
Although the game was very fun
There was still work to be done
"Dolly" waited for over there
For Wendy to give tender care
"Nurse Wendy" knew just what to do…
Soon Dolly would as good as new
Wendy had poor Dolly sit:
"These stitches might hurt 'just a bit'"
With Dolly resting in her bed
An idea popped in Wendy's head
She slipped on the Ballet shoes
To dance away poor Dolly's blues.
"Ballerina Wendy" - light as air
Twirled 'cross the room with grace and flair
She danced, she leapt, she spun around
Then gently laid out on the ground
A Black Hat seemed a thing to dread
When it jumped up on Wendy's head
But with her cape and trusty broom
"Witch Wendy" flew all round the room
Wendy started feeling sad
Some people think witches are bad
So she put her witch stuff down
And changed into a ballroom gown
The floor was cleared, the music played
The Waltz, the Stomp, the Promenade
At 12 o'clock, she heard them call
Her "Princess" of the Winter Ball
Then "Princess Wendy" hit the floor
And danced until her feet were sore
When the dance (at last) was done
Wendy wanted [still] more fun
With a pen in hand, she began to draw
Tracing cards to Ma from Pa
A Valentine heart – a paper dove
And once again, she's "Wendy Love"
As Wendy went downstairs for bed
(And when her prayers all were said)
She’d no more sadness; no more sorrow
I think, I’ll be just me - tomorrow.
