Poems - A Compendium of Clichés
| | A Compendium of Clichésby Marty
It is Midnight,
Zero hour!
And the only thing that I know of clichés is that
You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.
But the lines on the paper are blank,
“X” marks the spot.
My deadline for
writing is on the wall.
I had an idea of what I to wanted to do but it
vanished into thin air.
Now I am stuck-
up the creek without a paddle.
I wish that I could
turn back the clock.
You know,
start again at square one.
I do not want to
reinvent the wheel.
It is,
quite the contrary.
I simply want to
put two and two together.
Match up some
odds and ends.
It is no work of genius,
nothing to write home about.
But a
man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.
I once read a
little black book**
of clichés* and discovered how to
kill two birds with one stone.
I believe by
just doing my job
I will be done
In less than no time.
Half the battle
is knowing when to
go whole hog.
So, let me put
first things first!
I will throw in
everything but the kitchen sink –
dot all the “i’s” and cross all the “t’s”
and for the
coupe de gráce
I will do it all in reverse alphabetical ordered. The
bottom line is;
for a poet is it’s
all in a day’s work!
A friend of mine challenged me to write poetry based on any random cliché. This piece was the result of that challenge. All clichés* are found in "The Dictionary of Clichés" by James Rodgers, the book cover color was actually white.**

Ah, this is great and every one of your phrases makes perfect sense. You certainly met the challenge... For those of us who intentionally or unintentionally include the odd cliche in our poetry, that website you mentioned might prove to be a godsend. Well done, Mary Ann

Ah yes, Omegapaf, your acid test has found my Achilles heel. You have called a spade a spade, and let the cat out of the bag. But, to make a long story short - the worm has turned and now I must hit the bricks and quite horsing around!

Captain Mike, thank you for taking time to comment. I too appreciate and relate far more readily to rhyming poetry. This fact was actually the subject of my recent poem titled: Elemental Poetry.
