Endangered Species

I come from a place where boys turn to men with one pull of a trigger. Ending lives while creating them. Impregnating young girls with low self-esteem and lack of respect for their greatest treasure, self-worth.

See the hood is a cycle and I tried to break it. The courthouse full of brown people, another day screaming free another one of our niggas but we can’t seem to shake the boys in blue.

The “man” is on our ass from the street corner to Sally Mae collections, we’re killing ourselves. There’s no cure or treatment but a fifth of Hennessey and a bag of weed, now we’re feeling ourselves.

Repeating lyrics of hope like "We Gonna Make It, We Gonna Make It" forgetting all the ills that plague the community. We kill each other off instead of showing unity.

Black men graduating college that’s a dying breed, the two parent household a lost concept. Accountability fades while mistakes piles up.

Starting from behind in the race to the American dream. Bitter women and angry men build the foundation for the next generation of a somber tradition.

People that lack ambition yet still full of intuition about their place in the land of the free. Remaining slaves to ourselves, never overcoming the stigma inflicted by our oppressors.

Standing in our own way we don’t know how to dodge the daily bullshit that fuels our own demise. The road to destruction we ride on never stopping to ask for direction. A proud people that won’t seek help but will look down upon a man that will.

College Dropouts, Good Girls Gone Bad, reality television, portraying whose reality? Ignorance is the worst enemy. The eleven o’clock news documents our termination but we fail to watch. As we are the Endangered Species.

Compelling in it's honesty and authenticity... a well-written piece on one of the most problematic situations in our midst.

While pundits rail about war and debt and other things, not one word is ever spoken about the self-destruction of inner city families, a dire situation to say the least. Thank you for sharing your perspective.

Wow. This has got to be the most eloquent, and most masterfully crafted and mind-shattering expression of truth I have ever read. Will there ever be a morning after the storm? Well dear writer, with this magnificent unveiling of bitter truth, you have most certainly invited not only one community but many, to cross that bridge together in attaining that American dream. Kudos to you.
