The same old love song

by Ozymandias

many the lives spent searching
for the fabled Fount of Youth
many the hearts that failed on
discovering the truth

and the wearying truth disgusts us
with its burial of hope
as we watch the slow unwinding
of our finite length of rope

time plays his game of poker
his cards held to his chest
we yield to him the victory
our weakness is confessed

you say that there’s a heaven
I say it isn’t true
but there really isn’t any
omniscient point of view

we play the same old love song
that we learned so long ago
humanity’s rich anthem
with destiny in tow
