The Day I Forgot my Pen

by butterflyzrfree

Amongst thick roots protruding
from ground
lay a prize for the dog
chicken bone

Animals clean up after one another
even the waste dumps are for seagulls,
rats, mice, snakes, worms.

The roots protruding bother me
I trip and scramble
losing all intention to relax with
my dog on a beautiful day
get that all American exercise.
Lizards change color quickly.

Look up--trees full bloom like a
tunnel, a trap, we are stuck in the forest
falling leaves change color through the sun
picking berries, and the beauty and
safety of the tree-trunks
feels like home.

G'day Gail...
I loved your line 'animals clean up after one another'
That is how Mother Nature planned.
I think we might have stuffed it up.
Nice poem Gail.

Thanks, Lindsay! And, yes, we certainly have stuffed it up haven't we? Just too many people in the world, but, it wouldn't be bad if they would make the least effort to take care of things...

I enjoyed your attention to detail and how one detail led to another in this write and formed your poem , the dog and chicken bone, the animals and waste dumps, the roots that bother you, the lizards and falling leaves, an enjoyable read that left me feeling that I had been there to
