Hymn to Herne

Now come with shrill and cold lament.
From beneath the oak now winter’s spent.
Oh effigy, oh antlered man.

Come with chase, with bow and horn.
Through the powder of the winter dawn.
Oh Hunter, oh symbolic form.

So where does he be, in sleep he lies.
Once mentioned in the merry wives.
Oh effigy, oh antlered man.

This is an extraordinarily fine poem, with a quite fantastic sense of mystery - with a Shakespearean reference thrown in as well. This sort of writing, in which every word adds to the poem, is the very height of poetry, and is the end to which all poets aspire, but few achieve. Superbly done.
