My chickens (a terzanelle)

by amca01

My chickens scratch the gentle worm-filled dirt
And peck at grain that's scattered in their pen
With busy claws, and bright eyes all alert.

What a piece of work's the backyard hen!
My rotund friends, who burble quiet things
And peck at grain that's scattered in their pen.

They run to me with brisk and busy wings
When every day I bring them grain and scraps:
My rotund friends, who burble quiet things.

I love to watch their wings make little flaps,
They jump and squawk to greet me with their food,
When every day I bring them grain and scraps.

Just watching them puts me in quiet mood;
The world's a better place for these round birds:
They jump and squawk to greet me with their food.

The comfort from these hens outreaches words.
My chickens scratch the gentle worm-filled dirt -
The world's a better place for these round birds,
With busy claws, and bright eyes all alert.

Oh, what a colorful picture painted in words... I love this form in the care of expert hands; you've made wonderful use of it in your poem.
Cheers, Mary Ann

Thank you for your very charitable comments! It's a form I like, and certainly fun to play with.

G'day Alasdair...
I enjoyed your poem Alasdair. I like watching chooks too...
watching where they lay their eggs.
Thanks Alasdair.
