Ominous Omega

by fallenpoet

Smoke screen air
betrays your senses
as you breathe in deep
the putrid stench of death.
Rubble loosely pops
under your bare feet,
feet that are singed
with each fiery step.
The rocky, black-red walls
rise unyieldingly upward.
They tower above,
mocking your insignificance.
Searing orange coal-ash
float with intent.
Each flake of fire dust
burns a hole in your flesh
like a skewer through
freshly poached pork.
Flesh painted black from sin.
Each hateful thought.
Every painful word.
All the thoughtless actions…
They have left you marked,
branded with an undying rank.
The beastly ape god,
the Lord of Death,
awaits your organs.
He shall feast endlessly.
For you
there is no ominous omega,
only an ominous eternity.
My God, what have you done?

Whatever faults this poem has are more than overcome by its sheer intensity! Also, some very sensuous imagery makes our Dantean trip to hell sharp and vivid: The red-black color, firepit popping noise, and floating ash-flakes stand as examples. I was forced to imagine pain as I read this. Wonderful that you end with a mystery: What unspeakable act earned our protagonist such an unthinkable fate?

Well thank you very much for this thoughtful comment. This was based on someone very close to me who couldn't seem to get her head on straight. Digging her own grave, so to speak. Thanks again.
