Poems - The gibbet

The gibbet

The gibbet was an ancient device used to display the corpse’s of executed criminals. They were a metal cage in the shape of a body. And more often than not they were hung from trees and gallows on the outskirts of towns and villages, In hope of deterring others from committing the same crimes. There are many cases of some hanging for years with the same corpse inside them. The last one on record used in England was in 1822 outside the city of Derby. I tried to imagine what it would be like for a father passing each day and seeing his son hanging there.

You hang there son, for it has been
three Summers long.
The mask of life has fallen from your face
and soiled this once green earth.
The song of the steel turns your face to the east-
while the west wind dries a felons bones

I think we should introduce these gibbets for offending members of Got Poetry, as a warning to others to behave themselves....

Good strong write, Wayne - the idea of a father addressing his son is a powerful one.
