the shoebox

by wordsmithwannabe

He unties the aging string
around the shoebox marked “Son,”
gently thumbs through Polaroids,
breath catching with each tender moment:

frogs, caterpillars, muddy feet,
handfuls of plucked grass falling like snow;
each blade of green in the boy’s chubby fingers
a reason to smile.

They must have grinned a thousand times that day.

I enjoyed this piece, this has evocative imagery. This has a ring of nostalgia around it. PS: I commented your blog, but my comment was ridiculous. I got amusement from it, and that's all that matters. Laughing

this is AMAZING! it's such a complete moment, but it carries a long and rich and barely-glimpsed past with it. I can't stop reading it.

    thanks! you and Hugh gave me some great advice in the forums, to tighten up the language and cut some of the redundancy. i like this version much more than the original.

memories are powerful, Chris. They bring smell, time and feel along with the pic, more than a 3D effect..how wonderfully brought out in your poem.
