Drought

by fogglethorpe

We ran
from an oasis
we did not believe in
to a mirage
we did;

now the devil's claw
mocks us-
obstinate pioneers
in another fallen Eden.

That's what we do, escaping the reality, we seek the our own imaginary heaven.
Great poem, says much in a few lines.
warm wishes,

Yes..this is sort of a "grass is always greener" kind of thing. But sometimes, the grass is a tumbleweed instead.

A poetic way to say, “don’t put all your eggs in one basket”…but some of us never learn.

The "we" here is the human species I take it. The first stanza is amazing and downright quotable. The second is solid, but I would have liked the continuation of your desert motif. I do, however, understand the notion of "obstinate pioneers." St. Augustine said: "Our hearts will not rest, O Lord, until they rest in thee."

There's no "Drought" in this fertile poem, which packs a lot of philosophy into nine lines. Thought-provoking and beautiful, it's the work of a master writer.

Kieran..thanks for your astute observations and good review.

"We" can have dual meanings. This is an intensely personal poem, but I wanted it to be accessible and speak to some universal issues.

I understand about the desert motif in S2. "Devil's claw" was carefully chosen because of its multiple implications. It is a desert plant..it grows wild without any care from human beings. Some consider it a weed, though it is thought to have medicinal qualities. Then, of course, the word "devil" ties in nicely with the idea of "fallen Eden". And what is more of a fallen Eden than a desert?

I like the Augustine quote. It really bolsters the theme of this poem. Human beings can run from their problems, but they always bring their natures along with them.

Thanks again, Kieran. Your input is valued. Best..-H

That first stanza is so powerful! We humans always searching for something to believe in and we so often miss what is right in front of us. I needed this lesson today. Thank you.
