The Help

The Help

does her doo in her own loo
sometimes gives her point of view
stiring up her much ado
so I let her spit and spew

her table manners appall
so has to dine in the hall
she may not come when I call
just sits with a stare and stall

she can't talk or act like us
may greet a guest like a wuss
or make too much of a fuss
like kissing old Uncle Gus

but she's a great help to me
wakes me up at six-thirty
dances and touches my knee
with a smile and look of glee

she makes me get up and dressed
whether I'm wrinkled or pressed
so I don't get depressed
in a way, I'm very blessed

she gets me to walk with her
in every kind of weather
and we go look together
for signs of fur and feather

someone said, "A pet's a slave
that has been forced to behave"!
should I leave her in a cave,
her lost liberty to save?

but I would like them to see
that Duchess is family
she's already very free
and she wants to be with me-

though she's a real Bassette!
