hard candy

by graphitegirl

and then it quaked as if rubble
the foundation he bullied to the
ground with two arms taffy pulling
the family apart

“show me how strong
you are” he challenged

and she slipped a sweet wafer
from the dish
heart shaped and delicate
snapped it in two and swallowed dryly
pink candy

and then with all of her tiny might
she pulled up the undefeated
corners of her mouth and
had the last word
