Poems - The poet's dream
| | The poet's dreamby Ozymandias
The poet dreams another look of things,
shifting through scenes of darkness and of light -
But the world is what it is; it will not move
to the meter of his words. What use
to be a poet in these days
when fortresses tumble and ruins lie around?
What poems come
in this new give and take of sleep, this cut and thrust
of do and have done? We go about our business
of balance sheets that crumple
in a different kind of sleep,
a restless churning of nightmares
unsuited to poetry.
The poet has unfunctioned himself in this deadly night
where streets swarm with hookers and salesmen,
steel and glass dazzling with blithe slogans
to challenge the silence of the abandoned.
The twenty-four hour clock ticks ever on,
attention spans quiver and flicker
against the background of nonexistence. Nothingness
suggests itself as a sonnet, breaking its back
to fit into form, splitting the seams
of false costumes. Time to discard; time to come again
to nakedness and nostalgia.
In spasms of foolishness poems come and go,
calling out names with white dresses, hoping to find virginity
flowing in new veins. But there is none. It’s all been done,
it’s all been seen before. No more brave windows
to open on the world, no more illusions
to tempt the prowlers of the night. A poet’s just a name,
he’s sold to bidders at a rigged auction. He dreams
another look of things in other worlds,
and it is best that he should go
where dreams inhabit, in a space beyond
the fearful whimpers of a wasted world.

This is sad!
"No more brave windows
to open on the world, no more illusions
to tempt the prowlers of the night."
May the poet seek
new reasons and muse
leading towards
light..
fond regards,

Thanks Deepali. In my darker moments I sometimes think there is no poetry left in this world of getting and spending, glitz and dross, instantaneous gratification and superficial relationships. That's what this poem is about.

I could get that. We all have our trying moments. i'm sure these moments too are important and give us a new perspective, challenging us to move on "in spite of"!
lots of love,

G'day Rory...
I suppose each generation adapts to its environment Rory and I hope the contempory poets can. I dare say as we get older the ever quick changing technology leaves some of us behind and at times I do wonder about what writers are going to write about.
Thank you Rory

Exactly! I wonder about the kids of today, when they grow up, what will they be nostalgic for? Where is the poetry for them? Perhaps I'm missing something.
