The Recital

You recite words long since written
Some of them are mine, you say
And some of them are for me

Sadness cracks at your tone
And all the happiness
You've ingrained in your poem sounds
Truer

I've seen your life's progression
Even its discord cries in a major key
Your voice a harmony that always rings
As though I were drunk on you

A lilting cadence
Disarming

Fingertips trip
Strings hum and buzz
My voice falters
Stunned

I'm not singing to you anymore

The living room does not reverberate
From laughter or from lullaby
We left too much life inside of it

We forgot about it
How to live
How to play
How to write
How to sing

And collected all our things but left
All our memories for each other

They sing too, you know
Just as sweetly as we did
And I hear them as I hear your words
Intertwined in harmony
As beautiful as your poetry
But softer
