Pelicans at Altona

by Ozymandias

Coming home from work in the city
along the freeway as the evening falls so hard
you find yourself ensnared
in an angry tangle of traffic -
yes it always threatens to strangle you –
you, and your life of –

but

so far away, at first,
when you see them sailing through the sunset
like a serene prayer
ascending from the deep blue of the bay
to another life –
you had forgotten this formation –

for

on earth
they are unlikely bloated waddlers
making fools of themselves for fish,
gaping, grinning, pendulous
beaks of ungainly idiocy,
unfashionable parodies

until

they rise, and it is another life
heralding difference,
mothering a new vision
of what it is to be
a wanderer, wondering
at the great curvature of the world

and

this life of little things
haunts you in your smallness,
impaled beneath the great sky,
angry, cursing, crying,
making a fool of yourself
for fish.

nicely done.. it makes you want to hold your breath at each pause and wonder how every day we make fools of our selves to be noticed and loved. Thanks for the read.

Yes, so beautiful the scene of contrast against the sky - if only one has time to look and marvel. Truly enjoyed - Mary Ann

Thanks. I do in fact often see these pelicans flying overhead in their V formation, they are beautiful birds in the sky!

A deep statement made in a playful manner. That takes skill. I also remember noting in the forums that I really like the regional quality of this. I cannot imagine seeing wild pelicans here in the desert of Arizona. This poem is a gem.

I guess you would not see pelicans in a desert! But I am just a few miles from the coast, and there are wetlands around also, and pelicans are common. I muse on their lives, and the difference from our own, from time to time.

Excellent work, Ozzyman. The last stanza wraps it up in a very skillful way. Cheers. R

loved this in the forums. it grabs you and shakes you in a good way, left me shaking my head and wondering why i indeed do make a fool of myself for fish...wonderful writing, Rory.

Thanks Chris, I felt that in contemplating the pelicans we could all learn a lesson.

G'day Rory...
An amazing bird Rory. Thousands of pelicans leave for Lake Eyre in the desolate outback when the lake fills to breed and it's heartbreaking to see hundreds of dead chicks dead and dying when the water becomes too salty and the food supply disappears. Ever since a pelican damaged my face in the barmah forest I keep my distance. Isn't it great to see these birds so close to the bustling city.
Thanks Rory

I've not ever had trouble with pelicans, sorry if one got at you - perhaps you were too close to its chicks or something. Seeing Lake Eyre would be something else, eh? There's a fellow who has taken some marvellous photos of the lake. I think they might be on the ABC website. But it's sad about the birds, yes.
