Caliban

by wordsmithwannabe

Good monster of the distant shore,
fear not! I am no Prospero.
I only wish to comfort you
in penance for my life’s regrets.

What would you have me do, dear sir,
to ease the ache of misplaced trust,
to salve the wounds of wizardry?

I’ve no resource you may desire,
no wealth or title to extort;
I trade in verse and images,
creating life from broken words.

My hands will craft a dream supreme,
a gift of vision with no end.
I’ll sing to you a lullaby,
caress your brow with feathered quill.

Your tempest is away, good sir.
The time for sleep is now at hand.

from Shakespeare's The Tempest here is a link

thanks z_bub, Caliban is one of my all-time favorite characters, especially when looked at from a post-colonial perspective...Shakespeare isn't for everyone but he sure knew how to create intriguing characters.

We had a teacher who said if you are willing to put in the effort to understand the language, it's worth it. He was right.

"creating life from broken words"-Makes me think of what I once heard someone say, "God writes straight with a crooked pencil". Nice poem.

thanks D! i love a lot of what Shakespeare wrote (though some of it can be rather dry and difficult to read) and i've always wanted to write a poem based on his work, wasn't brave enough to do so until recently however. thanks for the vote of confidence!

Wow, way to nail it. Caliban is such a great character, and lots of productions of Tempest get him wrong. This is really insightful and delicate, which is a beautiful way to approach such a rough and toturured character!
