The beauty queen

by Ozymandias

(To understand what this poem is about, I suggest the reader might like to look at the Sedaka Sutta (known as The Beauty Queen Sutta), which can be found at http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn47/sn47.020.than.html#beautyqueen and which, the reader will be glad to hear, is very short.)

The beauty queen is singing, she is dancing
On the stage that looms so large above us all;
She sings of love, she whirls her skirts, entrancing
The human throng that answers to her call.

The beauty queen is calling us to follow,
To realms where promises come ready-made;
As millions mortgage souls to gladly borrow
The asking price of debt that’s never paid.

The man who on his head bears precious water
Knows well that he must never spill a drop;
For bandits follow close, and give no quarter –
His mind must never stray, nor ever stop.

And to the stage he will not pay attention:
For him, the beauty queen must dance in vain;
Though millions are enticed in her direction,
This man knows how the dream will end in pain.

The beauty queen is dancing, she is singing
Of delusion’s grasp upon the heedless mind
That never knows an end to worldly clinging
Though bandits slice the heads from us, the blind.

This is so profound!
An important message..."mindfulness immersed in the body", worth a thought.
Love it!!

D.

    Yes, I believe there is food for thought. I had this in the forums for a while, I think it needed the explanation by reference to the sutta. Thanks Deepali.
