I have to tell you what we said
in case you hear it
another way

I like her company
and she likes that
sentiment

I look at your face and I can tell
you don't want excuses
first, the refrigerator door opens
then the oven over-heats

"Which part do you feel guilty about?
No, I don't want to read that poem!"

you decide to have a swim
and I stay in the shade
with a crossword

when you come out
you look refreshed,
a towel around your shoulders
"Just be with me when I'm sick."

we spread a blanket
on the lumpy grass,
sprawl out
and rest in silence

back at my place
I make supper
while you wrap a gift
for my new grandson

dishes done
we sit outside
in the cooling sun
reading each our own

before you leave
to go home, I say,
"I want to grow old with you
doing this."
and then we kiss
