"a rotty's loose!"

"a rotty's loose!"

breathless girl
stopped us
on the trail
and warned us,
"a rotty's loose!"

keep going
or turn back?
we kept going
and caught up
with the rotty

rangers trying to assure
the hungry rottweiler
that it's safe
to eat
and be captured

I brought closer
a bowl of water
left for him
by those who
left him

his mate's
new puppies
already in custody
but mother
is in the woods

in the woods
searching-
milk drying up
in her sagging
teets

I watched for her
as we walked
and admired
the boats
in the bay

back at the picnic tables
we ate, shared stories,
laughed,
and called it
a nice day
