I Saw Spongebob Squarepants at the Pow Wow

Tonight, I saw Spongebob Squarepants at the Pow Wow.
He was eating fry bread, roasted corn
curly fries and funnel cake.
Shockingly, no Krabby Patties smothered in jellyfish jelly.

He was dancing in the arena
acorns wrapped around his ankles
cowbells draping his calves
hawk feather belt encircled his waist
an eagle feather stuck into the top of his sponge head

Colors whirled around sage plumes
Drums pounded rhythm into each high step
left left
right right
left left
right right
The MC calling “Southern Outlaws, you’re on deck”

I saw Spongebob walking the rows of booths
pawing turquoise
trying on shapeable cowboy hats
which looked silly on a square head.
He listened to flute music, and,
somehow, he recognized Carlos Nakai.

Oh, tartar sauce!

He ambled among Ozzy Osbourne and Tupac t-shirts,
sporting shaved heads, pony tails, and dreads,
imitation designer clothes and Vans sneakers,
real Wrangler jeans and western boots,
hip hop boxer shorts exposed,
Playboy bunny tank tops covering barely legal chests,
generations honoring ancestory.
His yellow hue comes off as pale
When compared to burnt brown beautiful

Tonight, at the Pow Wow,
spinning under a pineapple sky,
gliding muddy Mother Earth,
I saw Spongebob Squarepants
assimilating.
