It could have been me

"It could have been me,"
my mother said out of the blue
two days after my niece's death
made front page news across the state.
"It could have been me," and I could hear
the hollow echo of forty year old terror
reawakened in her voice.

..............................."Imagine a world
without Grammy," my daughter whispered,
and my skin prickled with the sudden absence
of every me whose mother wasn't
keeping watch when the monster stalking her
finally snapped. It could have been me, I think
and feel the emptiness of a world without.
