For Her as much as for Myself

For Her as much as for Myself

I'm sorry for my sour face.
It's just 7am in a state I've only ever driven through.
We're stopping for food on our rented van that pulls to the right.
Before, the winter morning sun cut through highway trees like zebra stripes
but you're too old to love National Geographic enough to know what that looks like.

That's a lie or could be 1.
I don't really know how old you are.
Beauty takes age but how long could you wait behind that cash register?
Chances don't come to people sitting down or standing in line.
This diner lays between a parking lot and an offramp.
The foot traffic is mostly old folks passing through
so why do you dress the way you do?
I'm a sucker for green but read last night
how top shelf brands put lead in their eyeliner.
Who's going to come to your rescue?

You're the most gorgeous S.O.S. signal.
Let's pretend we're both not just waiting to get out of here.
I could take you with me but I only carry apologetic smiles
and books I like to be seen reading
and you probably don't fold away neatly in the back.
But we could drive part of the same way,
share a cab when it comes down to that,
walk to the corner where our paths cross away.

I've got to at least get your name
cause I don't know what exit you're on.
I'll introduce myself first, say I'm from the South
and that's how we order back home. Or I'll ask where your name tag is
because the rest of this place has as much class as a science fair.
I'll try too hard and you'll laugh. It'll be perfect.

But in all the time I've known you I couldn't even brush my teeth.
Though I bet there's not much more to it
than subtracting the change out of a dollar
and memorizing key strokes.
Is this it for you? Is this all you'll ever be?

They're waving for me to go.
It's early morning and I'll probably fall asleep again.
We'll forget each other like phone numbers
but the funny thing is you'll stay here and I'll keep on going.
