Poems - Katrina
| | Katrinaby DaMoment
The rain, Lord the rain, caused us so much pain
We lost our houses and our homes to the rain
As the flood rose, rooftops many chose
To get away from what could be the end
Writing S.O.S. in hope to find a friend
A friend of the military, someone in a plane
To get people off these roof tops, with a reachable crane
Babies in wet diapers, pregnant mothers afloat
Agonizing the moment when they would see a boat
Looting everywhere, police resigning
I’d like to say this was truly bad timing
A nation mourned for a city scorned
In the depths of hell infections were born
Snakes and fish crept in the mud
Thanks for them it was a Katrina flood
Door to door rescuers knocked
Where signs of life, they would stop
Death truly raised its head
So many casualties, so many dead
FEMA just couldn’t get it right
For there was to backup plan in sight
On national TV the Mayor yelled, “We need help”
All the while dogs and puppies yelped
It was a catastrophe, far from expected
When the levees broke, the water was directed
Directed at the low-lying areas easy to cover
The nation waited in panic, wishing it were over
The hospitals had no emergency power
Again, waiting for help, seems to have taken hours
Triaging only made matter worse
For all wanted to live and wanted to be first
The dome, a soakage pit
Became filth-borne where many had to sit
Of all the busses in the state
Not one was used until it was too late
Refugees at first they were called
Evacuees, in the end said it all
They mobilized state to state
Separating from families was their only fate
How it really a happened, still a mystery to some
Katrina goes down in history as a time we wish hadn’t come
God wouldn’t have it any other way
After all it was He who chose the day
The day to bring the nation together
Unfortunately it had to be tragic with hurricane weather
Donations, the Red Cross and the United Way
Any help provided would make many day
Today the water still lingers on
A sight of remembrance, many still mourn
Katrina, how ironic the name
Preparations for hurricanes will never be the same
People will most likely get out of sight
Not wanting to live “Katrina” with all their might
The waters are calm now, with no new floods
Time rebuild all that lost in the mud
Katrina, the hurricane that came ashore
Put dead people in trenches, for they live there no more.
