i've known you my whole life
in the schoolyard during your
crip crusade. i was there
as you forcefed bullshit philosophies
to blank minds
stretched and bled the bodies
of those opposed
i've known you my whole life " took"
my first ass whuppin was from you
for wearin purple?
not knowing it was the preferred
colors of piru bloods
haven't worn purple since
or blue or red
all cause of you " took"
i watched your tribes
spread like sticky ivy limbs
throughout my inner city
and the music of your guns
like nursery rhymes put
me to sleep at night
you? i know you " took"
you stole my first bike
slapped my sister at prom
taught me the difference between
a nigga and an O.G. nigga
..a white mans nigga
showed me the face of hate
and how its conducted through
a mans body into the cold
end of a nine milli
and you beg me for redemption?
as your slain ghosts roam
city streets faceless?
from your lack of guilt?
and now you beg for redemption?
a changed man?
for writin childrens rhymes?
my children are no better off
from that shit " took"
they're damaged goods already
victims of a victim of a victim
and now you beg for forgiveness?
without remorse
fuck you " took"
i shed no tears on your cause
cause " a nigga don't cry for a nigga"

wow, this poem made me sit up staight. to put aside the love crap that gets lost in poetry and see real characters in real life. i really enjoyed this.

I read tookie williams' autobiography a couple of years back- probably around the time you wrote this, and I was left with very ambivelant feelings after the read. The book included his 'manifesto' for the gangs to stop fighting and stand together and some of his ideas for work with gang members in impoverished communities etc- it seemed far too little far too late to be honest. It's great to have a conscience retrospectively, but when you've murdered and maimed to get to that point of enlightenment it's fairly pointless. I think it had more to do with avoiding the death penalty than anything else. Had he still been a free man he'd have still been killing for power, but the terminator had the final say and used his power to kill- hasta la vista. Maybe one day we'll realise that aping the state is no way to progress as a people. take care, spence
