Poems - A Toy Story

A Toy Story

the kid has a new toy.
it's shiny and bright, it's got all these neat buttons.
he can't wait to play with it.
it's the best thing he ever had.
it takes up all his time, all his life.
he doesn't have time for the other toys any more.
they sit up on the shelf
and he never gives them a second look...

sometimes, it's not a new toy that he plays with. it's an old one.
it's familiar, it's comfortable.
it's not as demanding as the new one,
he knows which buttons to push to get certain reactions,
he doesn't have to read the instruction manual...

and sometimes,
when the shiny new toy runs out of batteries and doesn't work any more
and when the old toy falls apart...
then he'll walk up to the shelf
and dust off the toys that have been sitting there, waiting, patiently,
watching him play...

This is a wonderful analogy for life, love and relationships. This should be a poem for teenagers coming to terms with their newfound emotions and desires and a tale of inspiration and remembrance for we adults. Excellent poem cia- much better than the movie! take care, spence
