The Stalwart Beaver

by maryanns

Even today Bush Alaska is not connected by roads
Highways are rivers, and inlets, even sky up above
Transportation depends mostly on aircraft and boats
The De Havilland Beaver is a workhorse of note.

The Canadian built single-engine aircraft’s unrivaled
Known as a bush plane, Beaver’s still without equal
As the airplane of choice for bush supply distribution
The Beaver enjoys a splendid, flawless reputation.

She’s noisy and uncomfortable at times, and not grand
They’re all very ancient, no new ones since 1967
Still every bush pilot will tell you he’d rather have
a Beaver in his hangar, than some other aircraft.

The incredible Beavers are flown all over the world
A factory was planned for New Zealand, we’re told
Some Beavers have brand new turbo-prop engines
Kenmore produces in Seattle shiny new airframes.

Beavers on pontoon floats fly in Southeast every day
Back and forth between villages, fly lots of the freight
And for us passengers too, it’s just like riding the bus
When you arrive you’re all dirty and deaf, a bit much.

We would never complain, for they’d surely explain
The other choice was a Cessna and that’s such a pain
They bounce all around, sometimes fall out of the sky
Flying in a Beaver’s much safer, it’s my favorite ride.

Hi Mary Ann, taking a break from work this week so i can take a quick look at poems through the day.
This poem reminds me of the town i live in, Shildon that is known as the cradle of the railways it has it's own museum with yesteryears old steam trains on view, The Flying Scotsman etc. Nice poem

Oh thank you, Lou. I cannot believe all the Beavers that are still flying. Your Shildon sounds so interesting, it's good they've saved things so folks can see them. Thanks again for the kind comments. Regards, Mary Ann

Gday Mary Ann...
Another grand history lesson for me. I have only ever flown twice in large planes, and once in a glider...you won't go deaf in a glider.
Thank you again.

Hi Lindsay, I believe four plus pilot to a Beaver. I loved those flights. I'm not a fan of big airports and commercial jets. Thanks so much for reading and commenting. Regards, Mary Ann

Hey Paul, thanks so much for the read and comment. Yes, we watched Northern Exposure before we went north, I think. Filmed near Leavenworth WA if I'm remembering correctly. We loved it. Love and peace and stalwart beavers in every hangar, Mary Ann

Gosh, Maya, you were a' diggin' back into the archives, huh? I wish I could take you for a ride on one, safe as heck but noisy... they actually hand out ear protection when you get onboard. So glad you enjoyed it, and thanks so much. Take care, Mary Ann
