In the Native Tradition, I Mark Me

by bfaulkner

Vibrating needle noise on bloody flesh—
annoying metal gallops through the parched
desert epiderm stretched across my back
like thirsty lizards dying in the sun.
I, slowly inking vast empty frontier
in wings and painful color, grip the chair.
My fairy spreads in reds and browns; naked
is Leanan-Sidhee, a vampire woman, muse
of Irish poets, feminist symbol, lovely.
The West was civilized and “how?” ponders
the world. I know. It was a fiercely-mad,
intensely-fought engagement on the dry
and dusty, hot, uncivilized streets of places like
Montana, Texas. Such a searing war
is being waged upon vertebrae
and spines and ribs as skin is etched deep.
I grimace, soaking her in, essence, soul,
all, like the whites as they assailed old
unkempt savages of lands we murdered
for. In Native tradition, I mark me.
Spring, 2000 Boone, NC
Runner Up in the John Foster West and Marian Coe Scholarships in creative Writing, iambic pentameter

this has some deep thoughts in it.. I like how the poet turms tattooing into a reflection on colonization.. interesting title.. there is some good flow here... I can see why this one was a runner up in a local poetry contest
