Yeah Mom! I'm Cleaning My Room!

by varivas

I’m too big for all this junk
that fills my overcrowded room.
I think I’ll give it all away,
have lots more space where I can chill.

Hop on Pop! Too old for that.
I’d jump on dad when he would read it.
We’d laugh and laugh, roll on the floor.
I’d better keep it… for dad of course.

These books too, my very favorite
bedtime stories. I used to need them
every single night. Not now.
But I like to see them on the shelf.

Viewmaster. Baby stuff. But this one’s cool.
Dinosaurs. And this one’s from our trip
to Washington. Maybe I should
keep it one more year. Or two.

What’s in this crate? Lego Dragons!
This wing goes here, and this leg there.
I can get them back together.
I’ll only take a minute. Yeah mom,

I’m cleaning my room. Here’s what you
can give away: two paperclips,
Spiderman with a broken arm,
and this old red and black stuffed monkey.

Wait! I forgot. I won that monkey
at Six Flags. Maybe I could
fix that arm on Spiderman.
Two paper clips would work just fine.

Thanks! I really love writing kid poems. I need to start up again. I haven't been writing much at all lately. Time to get back into it.

Thanks! And as far as I'm concerned, saying that "it is so true" is the highest compliment I can get for a kid poem!

Thanks. It was kind of based on Billy, but my kid poems, unlike my "adult" poems, aren't always mostly fact based, but more "atmosphere based". I really do need to write some more. I want to get a book of kid poems together.

Excellent! I could appreciate this one thoroughly, being a "saver"/"packrat"! So hard to let go of things that brought us such pleasure and good memories. I say I'm saving all those wonderful toys "for my grandchildren" (I hope to have some day!), but I especially enjoy the childrens books, and could read and reread them! Nice job on this piece!

nice, original. I didn't know it was a kid's poem at first, so I was looking for a shocker, like something that indicated one of the parents was gone or something. This could very easily be turned into a moving poem about loss.
