Killed: the King

Enveloped in layers beneath the tempered steel

Wreathed by dents from this scar and that pain
Misery that runs true until it becomes addiction

Past the fear lurking in shrieking seas of blue

Brimming with the love that never came
Now the soul rises past windows that let no light in

Once revered now pitied
Once brave now beaten
Once they sought his love
Now He’d trade it all for an embrace

Steel sheathed once carried through a storied past

Ambivalent to the harsh winters
Evanescent in the waning summer

Beneath a wrinkled head bowed in disbelief

Left alone to ponder lies spun
Left alone to wonder about no one

Lies a knight in shining armor.

He’s just trying to die in peace.

But that’s hard to do when you’re out in the cold
And the only traces of royalty lie in the stories you tell

The children gather when the grown ups don’t care
If crazy Tobias can get words in their ears

Bum. Beggar. Tramp. Thief. Deluded Washed Up Vagrant.

If only they knew the glory that lay trapped beneath the grimy skin.
