My Heart

by Justinpdrew

It's difficult living with your heart 3,000 miles away
I can feel it bouncing around in her passenger seat
I shudder when she squeezes it too tight,
And I'm sad when she leaves it outside in the rain.

Before she left, we made a trade
I have a necklace she's had since childhood
It's hanging from my rearview mirror
She has my heart.

If it was here, I'd show you
All the places where it's been broken
All the places I've had to sew it back together
All the times I thought I was in love

There's a bruise on the left side from the first grade
Her name was Molly and she never talked to me.
Countless dings and dents from girls I've met or seen
All of them never living up to my imagination

There's a slight cut on the right side
Her name was Star and she was my first kiss.
The bruise came a year later at the same place
When she didn't recognize me.

In the center there's a gash that's swollen
It's been reopened so many times
Scabbed over and torn open by the same damn girl
More times than I can ever count

And you tell me that maybe
I've lent out my heart too often
That all these scars are my own fault
And I know you're probably right

But every time I give my heart away
I pray that it finds a home
Someone who knows how to take care of it
Who recognizes the love it can give back

So I'm asking you while I stand on my front porch
In the rain, drenched and crying
The phone tight against my ear
The end of the world looming ahead of me

Please, please, please
Don't break my heart tonight
I'm not sure how much more it can take.

I can relate to the long distance and the tug it pulls against your heart and the little scraps and bruises of past. Yet... when we think our heart has been through too much, someone lends a safe home for it to heal. It may take longer to find then we want, but it will come. Good write, enjoyed the read.

Very emotional, well-written poem. I like the the descriptions of the various bumps and bruises and scars, as far back as the first grade. Vivid image of you in the rain on the porch, phone pressed against your ear, 3000 miles from your "heart". Wow!
