Alcatraz

by Justinpdrew

If you tell me I'm selfish, I wouldn't disagree.
But I need to explain, I felt it the moment I saw you.
This pulling in my soul, I remember being so drawn to you
like fate was tugging at my heart, nudging me closer to you.

So please excuse me

if I talked too much, or stared too long into your eyes.
You see, the moment I saw you, I felt the clock start ticking.
I saw the time we had left together trickle down like an hourglass
so I took every moment I could to breathe you in.
I spent those days biting off as much of you as I could chew
in hopes of cementing you into my memory.

Don't hold it against me if I held you too close,
or if I kissed you too much, or if you spent too much time
walking around with your clothes in a heap.
Like I said, I am a selfish man. I wanted every inch of you
all to myself, you were too beautiful to let go.

I felt like a convict on his last day of freedom
spending as much time as he could with the outside world,
plotting ways to return to it as fast as possible.
He sees the loneliness ahead of him like a tidal wave
and he can't help but fantasize a world where choices don't matter.

And baby, when I walked away from you
I walked straight into a barred cell,
and here, in this cell, is where my soul rests.
I'm pacing from side to side, making plans,
writing down ideas, tracing my finger along the path
that will lead me back to you.

I'm praying to the god that I forgot
to return your warmth to these cold bones.
And I won't rest, and I won't stop
until I see that smile again.
Until I watch those tears fall down,
until I feel your lips against mine.

Until I feel your light permeate
this dark and lonely place I've built.

Nicely written! I'd say you are in L-O-V-E! I like the comparison to prison...trying to capture as much of her as you can before being locked away:
"I felt like a convict on his last day of freedom
spending as much time as he could with the outside world,
plotting ways to return to it as fast as possible.
He sees the loneliness ahead of him like a tidal wave
and he can't help but fantasize a world where choices don't matter."

This is my favorite stanza:

"Don't hold it against me if I held you too close,
or if I kissed you too much, or if you spent too much time
walking around with your clothes in a heap.
Like I said, I am a selfish man. I wanted every inch of you
all to myself, you were too beautiful to let go."

It's pretty special to have some care that much. Very emotion-filled poem. I enjoyed it and will look for others by you. Thanks for sharing it. Joan
