Flowers That Have Died

by Zbird

A tiny seed – a blossom’s start
children grow ‘neath a mother’s heart
now are gone – for whom have we cried?
The sweet flowers that have died.

Barely grown – yet a child no more,
you sent them off to fight your war.
Gardens of tombstones now abide,
the sweet flowers that have died.

You say they died for a just cause,
your words and actions give me pause,
behind your rhetoric you hide,
the sweet flowers that have died.

Garden blossoms cover the earth,
of the ones to whom we gave birth,
each week we replace with pride,
the sweet flowers that have died.

(The Kyrielle is a French form written in quatrains. Each quatrain contains a repeated line or phrase as a refrain. It has a meter usually composed of eight syllables per line but it can be varied. There is no limit to the number of stanzas, but three is generally the minumum.

The normal structure is a/a/b/B, c/c/b/B, d/d/b/B. with B being the repeated line.)

*this poem was written in response to a challenge by my sister, wolfinwindow. as kids growing up in the cold north we often had to get creative in our games and one was to challenge each other to write poems around a word or a phrase. this time the phrase was 'flowers that have died' and she issued the challenge to me, her daughter dreamdragon, and our other sister varivas. maybe we can have a family slam when we have all posted our creations.

growing up in the 60's I grew up protesting the vietnam war. and here we are 40 years later and nothing has really changed. from a child of the 60's to an older woman in her 60's I often feel helpless against a govt. set on war and my only voice now is in my poetry.

This brings back memories of the Viet Nam war and the song "Where Have All the Flowers Gone"? Excellent job! A Kyrielle, no less! Joan

when my sister, wolfinwindow, issued a challenge to me, her daughter dreamdragon, and our other sister Victoria to write a poem around the words flowers that have died I wanted to dig as deep into my creativity as possible and create a poem that had a message as well as being a good poem. i'm glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks Arlene Smile. I'm waiting to see what the rest of our crew came up with for this challenge. we'll have to have a family slam when all are done. instead of sly and the family stone we could have zbird and the family rivas... we'll work on the title for the slam Laughing

Very touchingly expressed. That refrain certainly works well!

thanks my friend. i don't take the easy path when writing these days and i have to say the extra brain strain has paid off in some of my latest creations. this was actually written as a response to a challenge put out by my sister, wolfinwindow. she challenged her daughter, myself, and our other sister varivas to write a poem around the words flowers that have died. when we all post them i think we're going to have a family slam.

that's funny you should say a nest of zbirds, because even though Arlene (dreamdragon) is Linda's (wolfinwindow) daughter, she takes after me in so many ways my husband has dubbed her Zephyr2.0 and Arlene's daughter Alyssa as Zephyr3.0 Very Happy

Powerful and standing at the correct location, not tipped to any political party or their ideals. Instead the tragedy of losing youth to the gears of war. Whether that is for religion, real estate, revenge, or regardless, it is still tragic that we lose so many.
