THE DD BIRD BAND

by dav.smith

The best band I ever heard
was not famous or extravagant
they just loved their music
their band was called DD Bird

Of the players so fine
Stevie played drums as Jimbo played Bad Ass Bass
Gill was on steel and Johnny on acoustic
Betty on sax was the oldest at nine

Now true musicians they were for sure
and I'll tell you why
their story is remarkable
considering they were all dirt poor

Stevie, she sat on the drums so grand
made of beer kegs and old leather aprons
she could get them to dance the beat
not bad for a girl with only one hand

Jimbo, strangled the throat of his bad bass
built from tea chest and fence post
strings of steel
he found from waste

Gill, was a negro boy and of it proud
he built the meanest steel
from piano wire and oil can
and he loved nothing better then to play it loud

Johnny, was the luckiest by far
although blind in one eye
he could tune any instrument
and loved his mothers gift of that old used giutar

Betty was an orphan girl, from the other side of the traxs
and could look after herself
and her keepers grumbled
when she found that old beaten sax

Now a wish wash group were they
but once heard
there was not a soul
that would not agree that they couldn't play

It's been years now, since we heard them play
They've either grown up or passed on
and how it saddens me
to think of the music they will not play for us today

Dave-
fantastic!!!!
loved every word- this contained so many stories within it-
only thing typo- acustic is actually spelt acoustic!!!!
unless of course you did this on purpose to add to the fell of the poem.....
yeah, they all sound like prime candidates for the choir of hard knocks- what a great program, it is truly amazing how people can find purpose and meaning in their lives or simply enhance their lives a little by making music.
thanks so much for sharing this

Wooo dAVE! I love this poem, wish I'd seen it the first time around back in September. You've described the members so well I feel like I could hear them play their music. Truly love local bands, Mary Ann
